I Wonder What It Must Be Like

I wonder what it must be like to be a whale, swimming the seas free
Taking time in life, enjoying the moment, exploring the waters far
Until a large boat arrives and fires a harpoon into me, slaughtering
To take me away to feed the masses of those who enjoy my meat

I wonder what it must be like to be a bull elephant, wondering the bush
Majestic, strong, powerful, and in solitude until I meet with my family again
Calm, proud, powerful and with no natural enemies, besides man
Who seem to find value in the beauty of my magnificent tusks

I wonder what it must be like to be a tiger, caught by a human
Kept in a cage, and displayed every day in a tent called a circus
Where I have to jump on boxes and through loops of burning flames
And then open my mouth whilst my idiot trainer puts his head inside

I wonder what it must be like to be a cow, born with one purpose only
To be farmed and fed until I am ready for slaughter to feed them
The enemy, the murderous lot who grow fatter and fatter
Oh how I dread that walk from the cattle truck into the abattoir

I wonder what it must be like to be a chicken, living a life of hell
My beak cut as I am born, force to live in a tiny cage, alone
Forced fed as rapidly as possible and then taken for slaughter
Where I hang upside down on the conveyor belt, awaiting the blade

I wonder what it must be like to be a canary, born in captivity
Then taken from my mother far too early, and left in a pet shop
Where a human comes to fetch me, just after they clip my wings
And houses me in a tiny cage until I get my wish; a quick death

I wonder what it must be life to be an ant, a worker, part of a family
That lives to serve my community and fulfill my purpose in life
Defending, supplying and feeding my clan, my queen, my all
Until a man arrives with a poisonous spray and kills us all
